Please note: this job is only available to current employees of Lancaster University

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is seeking to appoint an Associate Dean (AD) for Engagement, due to the current term coming to an end.  This senior leadership role is open to internal applicants only who must be existing members of academic staff within the Faculty. The role is normally occupied by colleagues at Senior Lecturer/Grade 9 level or above.  It is a requirement of this post that applicants have a contract of employment at the University which extends for at least 4 years upon appointment to the role of AD.

 Term of office

You will be expected to begin in role on 1 April 2024 (to include a month’s handover).   The post amounts to a 0.5 FTE appointment; this will be fully reflected in workload allocation models. The position is for an initial term of four years, potentially renewable for one further year, within the University’s AD appointment process.  The department from which the appointee comes will be appropriately supported to cover any effects on the delivery of its teaching programmes.

On completion of their term of office the AD will revert automatically to their substantive position, unless the appointment is renewed.  The University reserves the right, in exceptional circumstances, to end the term of office earlier than the scheduled expiry date, following a performance review by the Dean and with the agreement of the relevant Pro-Vice-Chancellor, at which point the postholder would revert to their substantive position.

 The role

This is an opportunity to become a member of the Faculty Senior Leadership Team, working closely with the Dean as a member of Dean’s Group and the Policy and Resources Committee (PRC). The role of Associate Dean provides academic leadership for the Faculty, to develop strategies around and shape our approach to the important portfolio of Engagement and inspire and engage Faculty colleagues in the delivery of these.   The role is also an opportunity to gain valuable insight and experience in working with relevant central University colleagues and divisions. The appointee will represent the Faculty within and beyond the University.

The Associate Dean for Engagement will provide Leadership to the Faculty in all aspects of Engagement. The AD for Engagement will join a new FASS Leadership Team and will have significant responsibility for shaping the future and direction of Arts, Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences Engagement. This will entail leading on strategic projects, management of Engagement processes and committees, the promotion and development of a culture of engagement, and promoting the FASS subject areas through Engagement. The role has endless entrepreneurial and creative potential and represents a significant career opportunity to innovate and play a major role in re-creating a FASS equipped to take on the challenges of the mid-twenty-first century. The work of the Associate Dean for Engagement will be supported by the Executive Dean and broader Faculty Leadership Team.

 Reward and recognition

Salary supplement

In recognition for taking on the role, the Associate Dean will receive a non-superannuable salary supplement equivalent in value to one (for a Professor) or two (for a Senior Lecturer) increment(s) on their salary scale. Their performance and progress in the role will be reviewed 18 months into the role; a successful outcome in this review will result in the supplement being consolidated into their base salary (and therefore will become superannuable) from the beginning of the third year of the appointment. Their performance in the role will be reviewed again prior to the end of their appointment as AD.

Furthermore, this role attracts an Associate Dean allowance to support research, knowledge transfer, scholarly activity, or educational enhancement.  For the period of office, they will receive a non-superannuable allowance of £3,000 per annum which can be paid into their salary or their research account. The Associate Dean will also receive an additional Faculty Personal Research Allowance (PRA), with the exact amount to be confirmed at the commencement of each financial year, as part of the annual budget setting process, noting this is currently set at £2,250 for 2023/24.

Academic Research & Education Leave (AREL)

The Associate Dean is eligible, at the end of their period of office, to be considered for an additional term of AREL, to be taken in agreement with their Head of Department.
