The Department 

The Department of History at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor. We welcome applications from candidates with research and teaching interests in European History (including Britain and Ireland) 300-1050 CE, who also have expertise in the broad field of Digital Humanities and who wish to exploit local resources from the period. We particularly encourage candidates whose research complements and expands the department’s current strengths. Applications from candidates whose work draws connections between multiple geographical regions or takes a transcultural approach, and who share the department’s commitment to decolonising the curriculum, are especially encouraged.

Following recent expansion, Durham University History Department is now one of the largest centres in the UK for the study of History. We are consistently ranked amongst the top departments in the country by the Complete University Guide, the Times and Sunday Times, and the Guardian University Guide. We place research at the very heart of our varied undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, inducting our students into a community of historians from the outset. Our research expertise and teaching provision extend from late antiquity to the present day, and we are home to scholars of Europe, Africa, Asia and North America and of social, cultural, political, economic, religious, intellectual, environmental and gender history. We believe that this chronological range and breadth opens up possibilities of transnational, transhistorical and comparative work that tends to be the hallmark of ground-breaking research in our discipline. As a group of researchers, we are alive to the fact that historical questions constantly evolve, and we are committed to developing the intra- and inter-disciplinary breadth to respond to, initiate and shape the discipline and scholarship more broadly defined. Current pre-modern research projects include: science in the Latin West and trans-cultural exchange with Islamicate thought; the history of Christian theology; cities and urban communities; agriculture, social mobility and rural history; cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean; history of food; scientific study of manuscripts.

Durham University has an outstanding reputation in the field of medieval studies, and the Department is closely involved in the interdisciplinary Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, which brings together colleagues from across the University. The Centre for Studies in the Late Ancient World is based in the Department. There are also strong links with the Centre for Visual Arts and Cultures , the Centre for Catholic Studies , the Centre for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy , and the Centre for the Study of the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East as well as with the departments of Classics and Ancient History , Theology and Religion , English Studies and with the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (notably with Arabic, Spanish, Italian, French and German).  Our postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers are also active in this interdisciplinary environment. We are currently home to students funded by two doctoral training centres, the AHRC Northern Bridge Partnership and the ESRC NINE DTP .

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make use of Durham’s excellent and wide-ranging resources for the study of pre-modern history which include the manuscript collections at Durham Cathedral and the University (which form part of the Priory Library digitisation project), the Cathedral Priory Archive and the collections of the Oriental Museum.

Assistant Professors at Durham 

Assistant Professors on the Education and Research track are encouraged to focus on research and teaching, but are also expected to engage in wider citizenship to enhance their own development, support their department and discipline, and contribute to the wider student experience. 

Academic colleagues are supported to publish excellent research in their area of interest with a focus on high quality outputs (including monographs and journal articles), rather than quantity. We aim to support your research needs, including practical help such as resources to attend conferences and to fund research activities, as well as a generous research leave policy and a designated mentor.

Assistant Professor of European History (including Britain and Ireland) 300-1050 CE with Digital Humanities

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the field of European history (which can include Britain and Ireland) in the period 300-1050 CE and Digital Humanities, with the ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • To pursue research that is high quality in terms of originality, significance, and rigour.  
  • To develop clear plans for the pursuit of national and international funding opportunities to support research and end-user engagement. 
  • To play a role in relevant teaching and research supervision, and contribute to ongoing curriculum development. 
  • Contribute to enhancing the quality of the research environment in the Department, the wider University and beyond through collaborative research activity. 
  • Demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the administrative work, citizenship and values of the Department.  
  • To deliver lectures, seminars and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, as well as engaging in related activity such as assessment.
  • To fully engage in and enhance the values of the Department.
  • To contribute to attracting and supervising research students, and to enhance the Department’s commitment to its vibrant and inclusive postgraduate culture.

Candidates will have completed their PhD (or be close to completion) and should outline their experience, skills and achievements to date, which demonstrate that they meet the essential criteria. 

Research  

Candidates must have the capacity for and be progressing towards the independent development of internationally excellent research that produces high-quality outcomes, including some work that is recognised as world-class or that has world-class potential.   

Essential Research Criteria 

  • Qualifications –- a good first degree and a PhD (or close to completion at the time of application) in European History (which can include Britain and Ireland) of the period 300-1050 CE or a related subject.
  • Evidence of knowledge, skills, and experience in the application of Digital techniques and technologies in the humanities.
  • Evidence of the ability to draw upon local resources for research.
  • Outputs – evidence of high-quality outputs, some of which is recognised as internationally excellent or world-class. Candidates are asked to submit two research outputs (usually articles or book/thesis chapters) with their application (as outlined in the How to Apply section below).  Candidates may additionally choose to submit evidence such as external peer review of their outputs.     
  • Personal Research Plan – evidence of a personal research plan setting out your plans for historical research over the next five years, which supports and enhances the Department’s research strategy.
  • Education 

    Candidates must demonstrate the development and delivery of high-quality teaching that contributes to providing a supportive and enabling learning environment and curricula which encourage students to achieve their potential.

    Essential Education Criteria 

    1.    Quality – evidence of the development and delivery of effective and engaging teaching. (Candidates may choose to provide student evaluation scores and/or peer reviews of teaching).

    2.    Involvement in the collaborative delivery of undergraduate teaching within the 300-1050 period at Level 1, and the provision of specialist sole-taught modules including a single-term module at Level 2.

    3.    Innovation – experience, skills and/or achievements that demonstrate your contribution to new programme development and innovation in the design and delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment of learning. This can include lectures, small group learning and/or using technology or other techniques to enhance learning and/or assessment.

    4.    Strategic – evidence of strategic teaching development, or achievements that demonstrate the potential to engage in the design of excellent teaching programmes which are research informed and led.

    Services, Citizenship and Values 

    Active engagement in administrative and citizenship requirements and to fostering a respectful environment, including a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Desirable Criteria 

    The desirable criteria for this post (for which candidates should provide evidence of some if not all criteria) are:

  • Qualification – candidates to hold or have the ability to attain the rank of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/individuals/fellowship/fellow ), which is the national body that champions teaching excellence (or Equivalent).   
  • Research Leadership – experience, skills and/or achievements that demonstrate experience of, or the potential to, contribute to the leadership of research groups and mentoring of early career researchers. (Candidates may choose to include information about research group leadership, mentoring of research colleagues, invitations to external events, engagement with international networks or projects).   
  • PhD Supervision – involvement in the provision of excellent supervision for PhD students.    
  • Research Impact – evidence of or the potential to demonstrate the impact of the Candidate’s research beyond their institution.

    Next Steps

    Short-listed candidates will be invited to the University, either virtually or in-person and will have the opportunity to meet key members of the Department.  The assessment for the post will normally include a presentation to staff and students in the Department, a teaching exercise, and an interview. We anticipate that the assessments and interviews will take place over two days in or around April 2024.
