We are seeking an infectious disease epidemiologist or mathematical modeller to undertake analyses of infectious disease outbreaks and assess control options. The role is employed by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), but based at Nagasaki University (NU). This is an exciting opportunity to work with an experienced team to help build-up expertise in outbreak analytics in Japan.

LSHTM is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide. Over the last decade, LSHTM has developed a strategic partnership with Nagasaki University, Japan. NU has a long history of research in tropical medicine and global health. The School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH), where the post is based, aims to solve world health problems through novel research and professional training.

An experienced researcher is required to strengthen the partnership and contribute to capacity building for outbreak preparedness and response, in collaboration with Prof John Edmunds, Prof Koya Ariyoshi, Dr Kaja Abbas and Dr Akira Endo. The post-holder will conduct research in epidemic analysis and response, with particular focus on the role of vaccination in outbreak control.  The post-holder will provide epidemiological/modelling expertise for NU, including training for students and research staff. There is considerable scope to develop their own research agenda within the broad area of outbreaks preparedness and response. The post-holder is expected to help supervise two PhD scholarship students and the wider team based at LSHTM and NU.

The post-holder must have strong quantitative skills and a doctoral degree in a relevant topic along with a track record in methodological developments or applied public health research. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time, fixed-term until 31 March 2025 and available immediately.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway scale grade 7 in the range of £51,299-£58,723 per annum inclusive. The post will be subject to LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per-year, pro-rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in Nagasaki, Japan.
