Offer Description

To maintain Durham's strength and reputation in the area of Roman archaeology research and teaching, we are looking to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Roman Archaeology. We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in the broad field of Roman archaeology with a focus on Britain and/or the western provinces of the Roman Empire. We particularly welcome applications from researchers working on aspects of the northern frontiers and from those with experience of running fieldwork projects and a willingness to engage with the Department's annual field school.

The successful candidate will contribute to the recruitment and supervision of PhD students working on Roman topics and develop strong research collaborations with colleagues at Durham (in Archaeology and other departments), nationally and internationally, leading to grant-funded projects and world-class publications. The postholder will be involved in teaching at all levels, offering our students an exceptional educational experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage fully in the services, citizenship and values of the University. The University provides a working and teaching environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate these key principles as part of the assessment process.

Key responsibilities

  • To pursue research in the field of Roman archaeology, ideally with a specialism in Roman Britain and/or the western provinces, with or with the potential to be world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
  • To deliver lectures, seminars, tutorials and assessment at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, and to contribute to ongoing curriculum development.
  • To develop clear plans for fundable research projects and potential PhD projects.
  • To attract and supervise research students, and to enhance the Department's commitment to its vibrant and inclusive postgraduate culture.
  • To help enhance the quality of the research environment in the Department, the wider University and beyond through collaborative research activity.
  • To contribute to the administrative work, citizenship and values of the Department.
  • To fully engage in and enhance the values of the Department.
  • Carry out other duties as specified by the Head of Department.

Person Specification

Candidates must have the capacity for and be progressing towards the independent development of internationally excellent research that produces high-quality outcomes, including some work that is recognised as world-class or that has world-class potential.

Candidates must demonstrate the development and delivery of high-quality teaching that contributes to providing a supportive and enabling learning environment and curricula which encourage students to achieve their potential.

Active engagement in administrative and citizenship requirements and to fostering a respectful environment, including a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
