The Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine (SMQB) seeks to recruit an Assistant Professor. The SMQB is a unique interdisciplinary activity, bringing together outstanding scientists from our Schools of Mathematics, and Computer Science, and the Institute for Metabolism and Systems Research. It has strong links with a number of other university activities, including the Healthcare Technologies Institute, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Science, the Centre for Digital Health and the Centre for Human Brain Health. Supported by core funding of £7M, alongside external research grants of £4M, the Centre currently consists of 3 Professors, 1 Birmingham Fellow, 3 Independent Research Fellows, 9 Postdoctoral Researchers and 2 PhD students. The Centre additionally has significant professional services support, comprising a Centre Manager, Senior Research Manager, Communities Engagement Manager and a Senior Administrator.

The primary research themes of the Centre are:

  • mathematical and computational modelling of biomedical and clinical systems;
  • neuroscience and neurology;
  • neuroendocrinology, metabolism and reproduction;
  • wearables and sensors.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual with expertise in one or more of these themes.

You will contribute to a range of research, teaching and administration.  In addition you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others can carry out theirs. Research and Teaching within the SMQB reflects our interdisciplinary ethos and respects the cross-School nature of our Centre. For example, many researchers within the Centre have a strong translational focus, with significant industry and clinical involvement. Further, the post will contribute to the development and delivery of new post-graduate taught provision within Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as the development of online professional development training in quantitative methods for biology and medicine. The role will further contribute to supervision of Biomedical Science projects within the Medical School and the delivery of our new MSc in Biomedical Innovation.
