The Department 

The Department of Geography at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor.  We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in the broad field of Human Geography.

Engagement with current methodological innovations in quantitative and qualitative techniques – for example, relating to digital geographies, geohumanities, critical GIS, participatory and alternative approaches to cartography, such as feminist, decolonial or indigenous mapping – would be a distinct advantage. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates able to introduce our undergraduate students to the quantitative and qualitative techniques necessary to the further study of such methodologies. Candidates will have substantive research themes that complement and extend the current work in one (or more) of our Human Geography research clusters (Economy & Culture; Geographies of Life; Politics-State-Space; Urban Worlds).

Durham Geography is a vibrant community of over 65 academic staff (approximately equally divided between physical and human geography), a graduate school of around 100 research and 40 taught postgraduate students and more than 800 undergraduates.  The Department is well supported with technical staff, including a cartography unit, and administrative staff.

It has ranked as one of the top fifteen in the world for over 10 consecutive years according to the QS rankings and is recurrently ranked in the top handful of programmes in the UK by various league tables (currently 3rd in the Complete University Guide).

Our aim is to sustain and support hubs of leadership in geographical scholarship – broadly conceived. We will maintain our reputation for theoretical and conceptual innovation so that we are shaping and leading debates globally.

Assistant Professor in Human Geography

Candidates applying for a grade 7 post will have completed or be concluding their PhD and, while they may have limited direct experience of the requirements for the post, they should outline their experience, skills and achievements to date which demonstrate that they meet or that they have the potential to achieve the essential criteria.   

Candidates applying for a grade 8 post should meet all the essential criteria.   

Research  

Candidates must have the capacity for and be progressing towards the independent development of internationally excellent research that produces high-quality outcomes, including some work that is recognised as world-class or that has world-class potential.   

Essential Research Criteria – Grade 7 

  • Qualifications - a good first degree and a PhD in Human Geography or a related subject (which for grade 7 candidates must either have passed their PhD viva or submitted their PhD thesis for examination by the closing date for applications) 
  • Outputs - experience, skills and/or achievements which demonstrate experience of or the potential to produce high quality outputs that are recognised as world class or that have world-class potential. Candidates are asked to submit three research papers with their application (as outlined in the How to Apply section below).  Candidates may additionally choose to submit evidence such as external peer review of their outputs  
  • Personal Research Plan - evidence of a personal research plan which supports and enhances the [Department’s] research strategy. The research plan should be a maximum of 2 pages and should outline your research objectives for the next 3 years which support and enhance the Department’s research strategy
  • Essential Research Criteria – Grade 8
