We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in Electronic Engineering, and we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with a strong record of research in the fields of Radio Propagation Modelling, Sensor Integration, the Engineering Applications of Electronic Devices, or Flexible Electronics.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding, unified Engineering Department which is recognised as being one of the very best in the UK, with a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. The candidate would be expected to work alongside colleagues within the Advanced Materials, Electronics and Communications Research Challenge as well as the wider research environment within Durham, for example the Durham Energy Institute or Institute for Advanced Studies . Demonstrable experience in teaching core Electronics content in our existing degree at Year 1 and 2 is essential. It is desirable that the candidate will also be able to contribute to teaching Electronics content at higher levels and relevant postgraduate Masters programmes as required.

In the REF2021 research excellence exercise, 95% of our outputs were graded 3*/4*, and all our impact case studies were ranked 3*/4*. Research activity within the Engineering Department is concentrated around three Research Challenges , namely Sustainable Infrastructure, Future Energy Systems and Advanced Materials, Electronics and Communications. Day-to-day research is organised under eight research nodes , with the most relevant to this post being Advanced Materials and Electronic Devices or Communications and THz . We are particularly proud of the collaborative interdisciplinary nature of our research, which also includes strong industrial partnerships.

The Department is committed to an ethos of research-led teaching at all levels of our taught programmes, and is ranked 4th in the Complete University Guide, 5th in the Guardian University Guide and 6th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 in the UK for General Engineering. The Department has improved its NSS scores year on year, being in the top quartile overall, and specifically for teaching, assessment and feedback, and organisation.

We are a scholarly community that is open, supportive, collegiate, representative and diverse: our commitment to this is expressed through work of the Department's EDI and Wellbeing Committee, and our Athena Swan Bronze Award. The Department is currently preparing its submission for the Athena Swan Silver Award.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have already achieved Chartered Engineer status and, if not already professionally qualified, candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability and desire to become Chartered.
