Northumbria University, Newcastle, is a research rich, business focused professional university with a growing global reputation for academic excellence. Colleagues are passionate about the principles and applications of Science and Technology in all its forms and strive for excellence in research, teaching and innovation.

Biomolecular Science is an integral part of the Department’s research portfolio which was a significant part of the University’s success in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 exercise, placing Northumbria in the top 50 UK universities for research power. Our REF 2021 submission, for which results are still awaited, once again had a significant contribution from academics working in this area.

Working within the Department of Applied Sciences, your role will involve both teaching and research. You will apply your expertise in teaching Biochemistry to our biosciences degree programmes and to the International Medical Pathway programme, in partnership with St. George’s University (SGU ). In parallel, you will undertake research to produce high quality academic outputs and generate income from funding applications and/or external collaborative projects.

The Department has particular strengths in biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology and neuroscience, as well as a history of undertaking interdisciplinary research, often in collaboration with industry and with UKRI co-funding. Whilst the successful applicant will need to be able to demonstrate their ability to teach within the area of Biochemistry, their own research interests can lie more generally within the above discipline areas. Details of our research groups and themes can be found here .

The Department has state-of-the-art facilities for research, including recently refurbished, well-equipped laboratories for biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, a microscopy suite (including fluorescence and laser capture) and a tissue culture lab, complemented by high performance computing and dedicated facilities for metabolomics, proteomics and genomics (including MiSeq, NextSeq and PacBio sequencing platforms).   The recent establishment of the Research England funded Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE ) at Northumbria University has brought significant investment in new staff and facilities. Supporting 80 academics, 20 research fellows and 40 PhD students, the multi-disciplinary breadth and depth of the Department provides extensive opportunities for forming collaborative working relationships for new colleagues.

The successful candidate will hold a first degree and be qualified to doctoral level in a relevant discipline. They will have subject expertise in Biochemistry to contribute to our Bioscience BSc (Biomedical Science , Biochemistry , Biology ) and MSc (Biotechnology , Microbiology ) degree programmes, with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. Evidence of research outputs which are of high quality and are consistent with criteria for inclusion in future Research Excellence Framework submissions and a proven ability to deliver high quality, research-led teaching are essential for the role.
