Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract up to August 2024
Role Summary
This fixed-term Assistant Professorship appointment comes about due to the award of a Leverhulme major research fellowship within the Department of History in the School of History and Cultures at Birmingham. The department has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching, including being ranked in the top ten nationally again in REF2021. The appointee will also benefit from interdisciplinary engagement across and beyond the School, particularly through the Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures and our various research centres.
We seek a specialist to help deliver and develop our portfolio in Modern British Studies. We would especially welcome applicants with an existing research focus on the history of Britain, Empire and conflict during the twentieth century. We particularly invite applications from historians whose research directly links with the Department’s established strengths in modern British studies and military history, broadly conceived.
This appointment reflects the department’s identification of Modern British Studies and Military History as priority areas across our core activities of education, research, impact and public engagement. The successful candidate will be expected to support and enhance our teaching provision in these areas. The appointee will likely contribute to the following modules: The Making of the Contemporary World; Britain and her Soldiers; Pandora’s Box: Europe and the First World War; Eye of the Storm: Europe and the Second World War; and The Global Cold War, in addition to other survey and skills modules as required (including Distance Learning and UG and PGT Dissertation Supervision). The ability to range across the history of Britain, Empire and conflict in the twentieth century is important.
The successful candidate will be supported to utilise, develop and customise existing course materials while bringing their own specialisms to core and team-taught modules. The department and School has a thriving community of early career scholars and the appointee will be able to benefit from a range of career development opportunities within a leading Russell Group University.
