The Department of Economics at the University of Southampton seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor* in Economics. The position is permanent and is part of a prestigious and long-standing collaborative agreement between the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and the University of Southampton. The main workplace will be the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, with the Lecturer attending the Department of Economics in Southampton for a period of up to 3 months to contribute to the Department in the UK. The starting date is September 2021 or earlier.

The University of Southampton ranks 90th in the QS World University Rankings and is a member of the UK Russell Group. The Department of Economics, one of the oldest in the UK, has an outstanding reputation for high quality applied and theoretical research in all core areas of Economics.

Candidates from all fields of Economics with excellent teaching skills and experience of teaching in Economics or related areas, and a demonstrated ability to publish in leading international journals are encouraged to apply. Expectations for the post holder includes: teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; planning and delivering of engaging and effective teaching activities that contribute to wider curriculum development; developing and maintaining a high-quality research agenda that leads to publications in top journals and grant applications; and contributing to the execution of administrative duties. Successful applicants should have a PhD or equivalent qualifications and experience at the time of appointment.

You’ll be based in Shanghai, on China’s central coast, known as a global financial hub.  With two international airports, Shanghai is a major aviation hub, supporting a vibrant multicultural community that includes western expats based at several universities and international companies across the city. 

The post provides a generous remuneration package, including health insurance and substantial holiday allowance. Whilst in China you will be provided with travel insurance cover, a basic medical insurance cover, and a return flight home per academic year (following the Chinese academic year) during your employment. Successful candidates must be eligible to work in the UK and China. The University will assist you in applying for your work visa applications where applicable.
