The role  

NU London wishes to appoint an Assistant or Associate Professor in AI Ethics. You will be teaching interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate students (e.g., in our BSc Computer Science & Philosophy and our MSc AI and Ethics, respectively); provide service to the discipline in line with the evolving needs and aspirations of the Faculty and University; and conduct innovative research in the area. 

Appointments will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching, service, and research excellence, and ideally we wish to appoint a specialist in AI Ethics. Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of AI to one or more of the following areas: applied ethics (especially in relation to AI technology), responsible AI practices, AI regulation and governance.  

Core duties will include development and provision of innovative and inclusive teaching in relevant areas of Computer and Data Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (e.g., Topics in Responsible AI, AI and Data Ethics, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing); professional service commensurate to career stage; and world-leading disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. 

Person Specification 

To excel in this role, you will have the following skills and experience, or transferable skills. 

For assistant professor:  

  • PhD completed, or near completion (all but dissertation), or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area.
  • FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected (desirable)
  • Can demonstrate, through evidence, excellent ability to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in the role as advertised with regards to teaching, service, and research.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake world-leading collaborative, impact-focused projects, and large external research bids, involving colleagues across a range of disciplines as well as external partners. 

For associate professor:  

  • PhD completed, or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area.
  • FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected.
  • Willingness and capacity to engage and develop working relationships with external partners and with colleagues across diverse disciplines in Northeastern University London and across the Northeastern University global network, as well as undertake continuous professional development for such purposes.
  • Ability to conduct internationally recognised, high-impact, externally validated research, with an interdisciplinary network of collaborators including non-academic partners.

Salary Comment:

Assistant Professor - £47,321 to £54,827, progressing to £58,155 once in post,

Associate Professor - £56,467 to £69,404, progressing to £75,833 once in post
