Assistant Operations Manager
Fixed term appointment to 31 August 2025
We are looking for an Assistant Operations Manager to join our support team. Wesley House is a Methodist college in Cambridge. We are a part of the Cambridge Theological Federation and teach, consult, research, supervise research, and offer professional training in theology in Cambridge and across the world. Of the 300 people taught through Wesley House last year, 100 students were on degree courses that are awarded through partnerships we have with Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Cambridge, Kenya Methodist University and Wesley Theological Seminary (USA). The majority of our students are from Africa (46%), with 29% from the UK and 17% from North America. 90% are part time. Our premises in Jesus Lane consists of a Chapel, Dining Room, Library, teaching spaces, offices, 24 residential rooms – all with en-suite bathrooms and with access to shared common room and cooking facilities- and four flats. Four of our students and two of our staff are resident in College and we let out the rest of the accommodation to other students and scholars.
We have a small support team of three employed staff working alongside contractors for accounts, catering, cleaning, IT, maintenance, and security. This role is focused on site operations, covering everything from accommodation, events, catering, maintenance, reception, maintaining alumni and other records and all the practicalities of running a small residential college in Cambridge. We want you to seek income for the College, primarily through conferencing and accommodation and so you will need to show an entrepreneurial attitude.
Your key strengths will include a hands-on attitude and a willingness to turn your hand to anything, including the less glamorous tasks such as broken toilet seats and putting the bins out as well as more fun tasks such as arranging College dinners and alumni events. You will need to be personable with good communications skills as the primary point of welcome for our visitors and residents, and be a good multi-tasker as you juggle tasks that need immediate attention with other tasks that have a longer lead-in time. Social Media and marketing skills and experience would be useful. The role does not include any staff management.
This is a full time role. There is occasional evening and weekend working for which time off in lieu can be taken the following week. The salary is £26,000 pa with 25 days holiday plus bank holidays and we make pension contributions of 8% of your salary. It is a fixed term appointment which will finish on 31st August 2025.
You do not have to have any religious affiliation to be part of Wesley House, though it is important you are sympathetic to supporting an intercultural worshipping Christian community and to working within our ethos . You will be welcome to join in the College’s social and prayer life if you wish to be involved but this is not at all obligatory.
