The School of Law at Birmingham City University is a large, vibrant and diverse community of legal scholarship, learning and practice with a strong commitment to excellence, innovation and transformation through legal research and education. In recent years, the School’s research reputation and ambitions have grown exponentially, and our research community is home to many leading and emerging scholars in a number of areas of law. Following submission of our REF2021 return, we have ambitions to grow and diversify our research community, building on the strengths of our research centres

The Centre for American Legal Studies reflects the school’s position as a leading British hub of expertise in American Legal Studies and is home to the British Journal for American Legal Studies and the School’s LL.B with American Legal Studies, which includes a unique US Internship Programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Our Centre for Human Rights hosts the highly influential UPR Project at BCU, which was shortlisted for a 2021 THE Award. Members of the CHR are engaged in the promotion and protection of domestic and international human rights across several areas, including in relation to capital punishment, freedom of religion and belief, access to healthcare, and the rights of women and girls. The innovative Centre for Law, Science and Policy is a hub for many multidisciplinary collaborations, including with psychologists, linguists, and healthcare professionals, with projects including investigations into juror decision-making and the design of simulated tribunals.

The Law School is currently looking to appoint an outstanding candidate to join the school in a role that will focus on supporting research strategy and operations. The successful candidate will provide support both across the school and within our research centres, including, for example, in relation to REF preparations, funding applications, scholarship, research collaborations, and events. They will work alongside the Director of Research, Centre Directors, and relevant university teams, and be supported to develop their own research, including through access to resources, dissemination opportunities, and the faculty's research development programme.

We would particularly encourage applications from candidates with innovative and interdisciplinary research aligned with the work of one or more of our research centres, and who have experience in publishing their research and developing funding applications.

This is a 12-month role at present, which the Law School would like to commence in March 2022. Interviews are scheduled for February 18, 2022.

Informal enquiries regarding the role should be addressed to Dr Sarah Cooper ([email protected] ), Director of Research in the School of Law.
