The Library and Cultural Services Section has responsibility for Library Services, Special Collections and Archives, the ESCALA and University Art Collections, the Art Exchange Gallery and the Lakeside Theatre. At the University of Essex, we take a bold view of art and ideas. We are the home of two art collections: the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA), the University's unique collection of Latin American art, with over 750 works dating largely from the 1960s to the present, and the University of Essex art collection which contains works by leading artists such as Christopher Wood, Francisco Goya, Alfred Wallis, David Hockney, and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. In addition, our Colchester campus is home to Art Exchange - a space where art, artists, and audiences meet. Our programme of exhibitions, talks and events creates a platform for ideas to be exchanged and connections to be made.

Duties of the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to assist with the management of two major art collections and contribute to the development and delivery of academic and research support services at the University of Essex Library. The Assistant Curator is responsible for the care, management, and promotion of the University’s art collections, including ESCALA and the Library’s art collections, under the direction of the Curator (ESCALA, Art & Special Collections). The Assistant Curator also provides support to the Curator (Exhibitions and Public Programme) for the day-to-day operation of the Art Exchange Gallery. They work with the Curators to develop and deliver exhibitions and displays linked to research and education at the university. They work collaboratively with academic staff and students to support the delivery of research led education through object-based learning and take responsibility for the management and development of the collection management system and the ESCALA website.

This a permanent, full-time post based at our Colchester campus however partial home-working can be accommodated. Some evening and weekend working will be required on a rotational basis.

Skills and qualifications required

Educated to first degree level (or equivalent) in art history or a relevant subject, ideally with a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in art history, gallery studies or a related subject, and knowledge of the art of Latin America, the post holder will possess excellent communication, presentation, IT, and organisational and planning skills. Experience of handling artworks, using social media for promotional purposes, and working within a gallery or museum environment is essential for this post.
