Health & Safety Manager

The salary for the post will be in the range of £39,874 – £43,161 per annum FTE (depending on experience)

The role is full-time, but it will be considered on a part-time basis, 3 or 4 days per week for a suitable applicant

Peterhouse is the oldest College in Cambridge (founded in 1284) and is also among the smallest (currently 291 undergraduates; 176 postgraduates; 44 Fellows). The College provides accommodation for almost all its Junior Members either on or near the main College site. The College is, therefore, characterised by a greater degree of regular interaction between Senior and Junior Members than is the case in some larger Colleges. It is a vibrant community, with many active clubs and societies, and a strong tradition of table fellowship. Peterhouse is situated in Trumpington Street in Central Cambridge.

To be responsible, in conjunction with the Senior Bursar, for ensuring that all the College Health and Safety matters are dealt with appropriately.  The Health & Safety Manager will oversee all significant Health & Safety items in the College.

The primary responsibility of the role is to ensure the smooth, effective and efficient implementation of Health & Safety items to achieve full compliance. The post holder will work in collaboration with Heads of Departments and other members of College to develop and manage a program of risk assessments to ensure risks are identified, managed and reduced and follow up action is risk focused, prioritised and implemented. They will advise and instruct Heads of Departments to ensure that they understand their responsibilities for managing the Health and Safety by providing advice for safe working practices, guidance,and training and information. The post holder will regularly review policies and procedures to ensure they are current and fit for purpose; ensure that all required tests, inspections and maintenance servicing is carried out to all plant and equipment as required by law to achieve full compliance, ensuring that records are held for future reference; develop and maintain the incident reporting process.

The role also involves investigating and reporting on and recording all accidents, near misses and related incidents – including diseases and dangerous occurrences; this includes control and manager asbestos matters and the asbestos register; together with all fire safety matters within college. The post holder will support and assist projects with CDM requirements and introduce project scopes to ensure contractors know what is required of them. They will provide technical help & support where required, or have the understanding of where to guide people to.

You will be a highly experienced Health and Safety Manager, who is qualified to NEBOSH level. You will also have current relevant or equivalent NEBOSH fire and safety; together with CDM qualifications (although training can be provided if required). You will have excellent organisational and administrative skills, and be proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook. You will also possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
