Offer Description
The Department of Computer Science at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented researcher and scholar to the role of Associate or Assistant Professor. This is a permanent position. We welcome applications from those with research interests in the broad field of Artificial Intelligence for Space-Enabled Technologies and we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with expertise in the fields of artificial intelligence, computer vision, edge computing, digital twins, human-computer interaction, user modelling, robotics, resilient computing, where there are potentials/achievements in informing space-related technologies/applications.
This post offers an exciting opportunity to make an important contribution to the development of Computer Science research (https://www.durham.ac.uk/departments/academic/computer-science/ ). It supports the newly founded Responsible Space Innovation Centre (https://www.durham.ac.uk/research/institutes-and-centres/responsible-space-innovation-centre/ ), a multidisciplinary research centre that has received an initial investment of £2.76 million from Durham University. The Centre links up research in Computer Science with other disciplines for space-related technologies, providing access to valuable industrial and academic networks.
The successful candidate will play a significant role in the founding of this new centre and it is expected that this will be the focus of their activity for an initial period of four years. Therefore they will enjoy (1) a significantly reduced teaching load, (2) a fully-funded PhD studentship for 3.5 years, (3) a startup travel budget, (4) a possibility, with a compelling proposal, for a 2-year Post-Doctoral Research Associate fully-funded by the Centre. These will allow them to conduct high-quality research and bid for research grants, as well as to lead initiatives to involve the wider Computer Science staff in research opportunities arising from the Responsible Space Innovation Centre. They will join, and be supported by, the Vision, Imaging and Visualisation (VIViD) research group (https://vivid.webspace.durham.ac.uk/ ). After four years and periodically thereafter, the appointment will be reviewed, and, depending on grant income, will either be predominantly research or convert to an Education and Research Track position with a normal teaching load.
This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching while allowing you unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution.
