The University of Helsinki is an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. It is one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities and ranks among the top 100 international universities in the world. We are an equal opportunity employer and offer an attractive and diverse workplace in an inspiring environment with a variety of development opportunities and benefits.
The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-sciences ) is Finland’s most high-profile and extensive hub of research and teaching in the field. The professorship is based in the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme, which is one of the three Research Programmes in the Faculty. Neurobiology, including electrophysiology and molecular and developmental biology of the brain, is an area of strength of the Programme. The other areas of strength of the Programme are cell and developmental biology, genetics, and structural biology and virology. For further information, see https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-scien... ).
The research and teaching activities at the Viikki Campus are supported by state-of-the-art infrastructures including core facilities for e.g. DNA sequencing and genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and light- and electron microscopy (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science/hilife-res... ). Within the Research Programme, neurobiology research is supported by an in-house animal facility and abundant instrumentation for electrophysiology. There are numerous research groups in the Viikki Campus that focus on e.g. molecular and developmental neurobiology, mechanisms of cell and network level activity, as well as on neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. The Viikki Campus is one of the three centres of neuroscience research in the Helsinki area, the other two being located in the Meilahti Campus, and at the Aalto University. The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences actively develops teaching of neurobiology both at the Master’s and Doctoral levels (Master’s Programme in Neuroscience and Doctoral Programme Brain & Mind).
The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences invites applications for the position of
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (TENURE TRACK) IN INTEGRATIVE NEUROBIOLOGY
The successful applicant may be appointed to a fixed-term assistant / associate professorship (tenure track) (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/careers-at-the-university-of-helsi... ) depending on the applicant’s qualifications and career stage.

Candidates must have a doctorate degree and significant post-doctoral experience and recent demonstration of excellence in research. Early stage independent researchers are especially encouraged to apply.
The assistant / associate professor is expected to build up and lead an independent research group, acquire external research funding, and conduct innovative research in integrative neurobiology. An appointee to an associate / assistant professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be given in particular to scientific publications and their impact in the applicant’s field of research, and skills in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, and success in obtaining external research funding.
There is no requirement to be proficient in Finnish for foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good skills in English.
The annual gross salary for assistant/associate professors typically amounts to 60,000 - 72,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s career stage and scholarly qualifications. In addition to the facilities and research infrastructure that are currently available, the Faculty will provide a startup package to the appointee.
