Working under the umbrella of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) is the government agency responsible for keeping the nation safe from animal disease, identifying infections that may impact on people, the environment, and the economy. We also respond to disease outbreaks, conduct scientific research, and support the international trade of animal products and plants – meaning our work is high profile and fascinating.

Due to the partial retirement of the current postholder a rare and exciting senior leadership opportunity has arisen for a veterinarian to act jointly as the APHA Lead in AMR. This is an area of high profile and priority across government and society where the APHA provide national and international leadership. You will lead the APHA portfolio of surveillance and research work in AMR, ensuring fitness for purpose, high scientific standards, timely delivery and reporting, and act as a principal point of liaison on AMR related matters. In leading the UK National Reference Laboratory for AMR in the Veterinary Sector you will ensure that AMR incidents of concern are investigated in a timely fashion in liaison with all stakeholders. You will also provide strategic direction for AMR surveillance and research activities in the longer term.

Inclusion, support and the development of our people matter to us. We aim to support the career and personal wellbeing of everyone in APHA. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options, and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working.
