About the position

We have a vacancy for a 100 % permanent position as Animal Care Technician

At NTNU, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, there is a vacancy for a full-time position as animal care technician Staff Engineer, code 1085, permanent position. The vacancy is at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience / Centre for Neural Computation (KISN).

The KISN is one of 20 institutes established by the Kavli Foundation (www.kavlifoundation.org ) and is one of 8 departments at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. For more information about the Kavli Institute, https://www.ntnu.edu/kavli

The Kavli Institute uses rats, mice and zebrafish as research animals. The vacancy is related to the institute’s research facility holding rodents. The main tasks will be daily work related to the housing and care of the animals.

The work involves frequent handling of rats and mouse cages and associated equipment. The work will be done in collaboration with other animal care technicians and the facility veterinarian. The work will include work during holidays and during vacations following a scheduled plan.  

The position reports to the designated veterinarian.

Duties of the position

  • Daily health inspection of animals, including notifications and proper action in case signs of disease or injuries are discovered
  • Cleaning of cages and associated equipment
  • Facilitation for researchers
  • Record keeping and documentation according to legislational requirements and internal routines
  • Maintenance tasks as needed

Required selection criteria

  • Relevant education equivalent to minimum bachelor’s degree. Prior learning and work experience relevant to the duties in the position may compensate for the education requirement.
  • Candidates cannot have known health issues caused by allergies towards rodents
  • Due to manual labor, good physical fitness is required
  • Good communication skills
  • Good written and oral English language skills
  • Good written and oral Norwegian language skills, minimum at intermediate knowledge level

Preferred selection criteria

  • Competence within laboratory animal science minimum equivalent to function c (taking care of animals) as described in the EU directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. If such a course is not already completed, candidates with motivation to complete a training course to acquire this competence will be preferred.
  • Experience with rodents and with working in a research animal facility
  • Experience with taking care of animals
  • Responsible and reliable
  • Flexible and available to work during weekends and vacation seasons according to schedule

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Staff Engineer code 1085 is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 396 900 - 483 700 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria's in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
