The overall role of the post holder will be to take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Preclinical neuroimaging and biomarkers facility (The BRAIN Centre) at Denmark Hill.  

Specifically, this will involve managing multiple projects, timetabling, chairing  protocol meetings, providing financial estimation and planning and supporting preclinical projects with emphasis on research of the central nervous system. 

The post holder will work closely with the Facility Manager to align the operation of the facility with its strategic aims, and with the Preclinical MRI physicist/analyst to harmonise the operations of the Facility to meet the needs and requirements of neuroimaging users and collaborators. The role will also involve implementation of novel methodologies with MR and PET imaging (e.g. EEG, microdialysis, opto/chemogenetics) as well as some assistance with the maintenance of the MR scanner, data archiving and analysis pipelines, with the full support from the Facility Manager and the Preclinical MR Physicist/Analyst. 

The post holder will lead in protocol meetings and assist the Facility manager with planning of projects for users and collaborators.  

The post holder will be able to use their skills/knowledge to develop novel methods for neuroscience data acquisition and/or analysis to benefit end users in line with the strategic aims of the preclinical facility. This will also include presenting research findings at academic meetings, and contributing to manuscript and/or report writing. 

The post holder will act as Radiation Protection Supervisor for both the Facility and wider Department

  • Providing scientific and technical expertise to projects within the Facility  
  • Deputy Facility Manager, ensuring the smooth running of such projects, through activities such as 
  • Timetabling of MR scanner usage 
  • Timetabling of all experimental activities 
  • Assistance in maintenance of physiological monitoring equipment 
  • Management of (non MR) laboratory equipment, supplies and procedures  
  • Health and safety supervision for the Facility  
  • Radiation protection supervision for the Facility and the department 
  • Perform additional support to MR Physicist in the basic maintenance of MR scanner, routine quality control assessments, training of users, routine data processing and archiving, and assisting with ongoing projects, when appropriate, by prior arrangement and as directed by supervisor. 
  • Annual Home office animal usage returns  
  • Develop and undertake research of high quality consistent with making a full and active research contribution in line with Departmental and School strategies. 
  • Involvement in all aspects of projects (planning, preparation, data collection, standard statistical analysis, application of the developed technologies to various data sets, report writing). 
  • Maintain and develop the academic and industrial network built around projects. 
  • Manage laboratory technicians and research assistants 
  • Work as a conscientious and committed member of the team in order to achieve the aims of the project and of the group. 
  • Contribute to routine activities of the lab and the running of experimental studies.

Essential criteria  

1.      PhD awarded in Medical Imaging/Pharmacology/ Neuroscience or a related field  

2.      Experimental Methods in the Biological Sciences  

3.      Experimental Methods in the Neurosciences  

4.      Experimental Methods in Brain Imaging (MR/EEG/PET) 

5.      Scientific writing and presentation skills  

6.      Laboratory experimental methods in rodents 

7.      Administering a lab including ordering and maintenance of supplies and equipment, and ensuring adherence to health and safety requirements  

8.      Project management and delivery 

9.      Autoradiography and histology  

10.   MR/MRS/PET methods in pre-clinical sciences 

11.   Home office Personal Licence (PIL) for animal work 

12.   Ability to work with radioactivity 

Desirable criteria
