The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.
Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FRS, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top five cancer centres globally.
The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

The Genomics Facility at the ICR is a state-of-the-art facility that uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies to investigate cancer genomes in patient biopsies from diagnosis and throughout treatment. The Genomics Facility provides a comprehensive set of genomic profiling platforms aimed at understanding tumor biology and cancer treatment. As part of the Genomics Facility, the Bioinformatics Technical Support service provides bioinformatics support to research teams across the ICR and Royal Marsden informatics community.

Core Research Facilities are part of the wider Academic Services Directorate supporting the researchers at the ICR. The use of cutting-edge technology coupled with the brilliant expertise to employ it effectively is essential to the success and progress of our research work.  We are proud to have a number of core facilities within the ICR that provide this resource to our researchers.

We are looking for a driven, motivated individual to support a range of innovative projects within the Genomics Facility. In this role, you will work within a specialised team (containing both wet lab and dry staff) to provide expert, technical support for a number of key NGS projects currently underway using Illumina and Ion Torrent Sequencer systems.

You will hold a degree in Informatics Science with proven experience in experienced using Unix/ processing NGS data, programming, using tools like R/Bioconductor and Linux shell scripting. A PhD and previous experience in NGS technologies, including but not limited to genomics pre-processing, analysis and development of new applications would be highly advantageous. The ability to work well within a multi-disciplined team coupled with excellent organisational and communication skills is essential.

The appointment will be on a Fixed Term Contract until 1st November 2024. The full salary range for the grade is £32,000-£44,400 per annum inclusive. Appointments are normally made at the start of the range but consideration will be given to relevant experience and skills. Future progression is based on annual performance review.
