Offer Description

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) group as an analytical chemist to conduct physicochemical measurements (solubility, lipophilicity and acid dissociation constants) as part of an experienced, multi-disciplinary team within the DDU.

The post is therefore suited to an individual with broad experience in laboratory analytical methods (particularly chromatography-based techniques) gained over several years in the pharmaceutical/contract research industries and/or academia. With a deep and thorough understanding of chromatographic analytical techniques, this role would suit someone who would like to apply their skills in the search for new molecules to tackle major global diseases.

This is a unique opportunity to grow your expertise in industry-style drug discovery within an academic setting. The bioanalytical laboratories within the DMPK group are well equipped to meet the demands required of an early drug discovery organisation, with multiple UHPLC/MS systems and other analytical equipment. Working across several teams and liaising with experts in different disciplines, you will be uniquely placed to influence the future development of our methodology. Our busy public engagement programme offers an opportunity to gain new skills and inspire people beyond the DDU with the work you do.

Your responsibilities:

  • Running routine assays to determine the solubility and lipophilicity of new chemical entities using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) – mass spectroscopic (MS) methodologies.
  • Measuring acid dissociation constants using a dedicated instrument (Sirius T3).
  • Determining compound purity using HPLC/MS.
  • HPLC method development/validation as required to develop new methods of analysis.
  • Performing data analysis and relevant quality control of conducted assays, with routine instrument maintenance as required.
  • Running routine bioanalytical assays as required in support of in-vitro/in-vivo drug discovery assays.
  • Working collaboratively with members of the Drug Discovery Unit and academic and/or industrial collaborators to support drug discovery programmes.

Who we are looking for:

  • At least a Degree or Masters in chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences or life sciences (or equivalent).
  • A minimum of two years’ relevant experience gained in an industrial or academic setting.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the use of (ultra) high performance liquid chromatography ((U)HPLC) in the analysis of pharmaceuticals, including method development and validation. Experience of the maintenance of HPLC systems would also be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of mass spectrometers and their use in combination with HPLC systems.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organisational, teamworking and presentation skills

The post is available immediately. Salary will depend on experience but will be in the range £36,024 - £44,263 The Drug Discovery Unit operates on an external funding basis. The Principal Investigators within these units are highly successful in securing external funding for their multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative research and activities.
