The Role and Department 

Dynamic and vibrant, Durham University Business School is one of Durham University’s four Faculties and is comprised of four research-intensive departments: Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Management and Marketing. Known for its global reputation, its impact on policy and practice and its strong focus on ethics, responsibility and sustainability, the School aims to be a leading European business school with a strong global presence by 2027.

The School currently has 195 academic and teaching staff, with plans and resource commitments to grow to 230 by 2027. The School has a high-quality portfolio of programmes at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level, across all subject areas. The school’s student population is around 4000 plus, across undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, attracting a talented and diverse student intake (with over 130 nationalities).

The Business School seeks an outstanding Alumni Relations Manager to promote and strengthen the alumni network, partnerships and engagement opportunities globally. The role is a fixed-term (31 week) maternity cover appointment. 

The School currently has a global alumni community of over 36,000 across 140 countries, and providing a high-quality alumni relations service is an essential to the achievement of the School’s strategic objectives. The Alumni Relations Manager is responsible for managing and developing this service, including a range of project work, events and activities to develop and strengthen engagement with our alumni and the wider international community. In collaboration with colleagues in the School, including members of the Executive Team and other internal and external stakeholders, the post holder will identify and gain agreement of shared objectives, Key Performance Indicators and implementation plans to achieve relevant Strategic Framework outcomes.

Qualifications/Experience
1.    Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
2.    Professional practitioner with knowledge and expertise in the delivery and development of services, events, and activities within the organisation.
3.    Experience of implementing policies and procedures and supporting change and service improvements. 
4.    Experience of providing specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues.               

5.  Experience of working internationally and an appreciation of the needs of regional, national and international stakeholders including students, alumni and external partners.                                                                                                                                                                                       

6.    Experience of being able to network effectively nationally and internationally to share and discuss good practice, develop strong and productive working relationships and to positively influence the University’s reputation.
7.    Experience of managing and developing a team or teams and/or line management qualification. 

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
8.    Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

9. The ability to make professional and effective presentations to staff, corporate partners and postgraduate students and alumni.                         

10.    Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, business systems.

•    Support the welfare and wellbeing of your team referring more complex issues to specialist services.

Communication/Liaison
•    Use your operational expertise to participate in business meetings, working groups and sub-committees.
•    Use the best media and method to communicate with internal and external stakeholders, taking account of the global nature of the alumni community.

•    Create positive working relationships, including internal and external networks, using your networks to increase your knowledge and skills, swap information with peers.

SECONDMENT

The post is full time, fixed term for a period of 31 weeks and may be offered on an internal secondment basis subject to the agreement of the current line manager,
