Job summary

The post is funded by the Infection and AMR theme of the Biomedical Research Centre to support the objectives of the research programme, in particular the diagnsotics sub-theme. The post holder will work closely with internal partners at Imperial Clinical Trials Unit and the NIHR funded MedTech In Vitro Diagnostic Collaborative to develop new proposals, particularly focussed on evaluating the impact of diagnostic tests. The candidate should be an emerging leader in the area and  will have a sufficient track record in the area to plan, carry out and lead high quality programme of research , seeking external funding to do so working closely with the NIHR funded London Co-operative in MedTech and In-vitro Diagnsotics.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Design, plan and lead high quality original diagnostics research, project managing the research activity, ensuring deliverables are achieved, and where applicable, supervising and taking responsibility for research team colleagues

  • Publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals

  • Attend and present work at national and international conferences

  • Seek research grants from national and international funding bodies; obtain funding from industry where appropriate

  • Supervise postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students and undergraduate research projects


Essential requirements

  • PhD in area of diagnostic evaluation or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

  • CCT in Infectious Diseases/Microbiology

  • Knowledge of methodologies of diagnostic evaluation

  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures for diagnostic evaluation

  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publications in relevant and refereed journals;

  • Experience of dealing with [specific groups of people, e.g. sponsors, patients]

  • A record of high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with other academics

  • Experience of the supervision of research of undergraduate/postgraduate students or postdoctoral staff

  • Experience of presenting results and findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences e.g. at significant conferences or engaging with the public on science

  • Demonstrated success in delivering research results with evidence of national recognition and a growing reputation

  • Demonstrated appropriate technical skills to perform research in the field (e.g. laboratory, analytical, programming, or fieldwork skills) and to design, plan and lead high quality original research, project managing the research activity, ensuring deliverables are achieved and, if applicable, supervising and taking responsibility for research team colleagues

  • Evidence of having made a significant contribution to writing proposals

  • Evidence of teaching and teaching support
