Professor Michel Michaelides’ team has been integral to UCL Institute of Ophthalmology’s ongoing contribution to the understanding of inherited retinal diseases for more than 20 years, in terms of clinical characterisation, genotype-phenotype correlations, structure-function associations, advanced high-resolution quantitative retinal imaging, and the underlying molecular genetics both in terms of identification of novel genes and also characterising the mutation spectrum and prevalence in known genes. The IoO AOSLO Facility provides state-of-the-art, high-resolution imaging of the retinal structure in research participants with a variety of ophthalmic conditions with the aim to better understand eye disease on a cellular level. The successful candidate will be a key member of the AOSLO Facility team and have a role in all aspects of what we do; AOSLO maintenance, leading image acquisition sessions, analysis of AOSLO image sequences and academic discussion. We are also always looking for team members with new skills that could help us improve how we run. The post holder’s role involves two main aspects:

1. Interacting with visually impaired and normally sighted research participants and administering both common clinical vision tests and cutting-edge research-grade retinal imaging modalities and assessments, such as Adaptive Optics Scanning Light Ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO). Hand-Held Optical Coherence Tomography (HH-OCT) and Vision-Guided Mobility Assessments.

2. Providing technical support for the AOSLO Facility (hardware and software). Full, in-house training will be provided. Whilst performing imaging, there will be some tasks that demand hand-eye coordination and fine motor control skills. For example, while acquiring Adaptive Optics SLO image sequences there is a need to control software on a PC, adjust electronic devices and maintain the patient’s pupil aligned, simultaneously, alternating between sitting and standing positions. Details of the IoO AOSLO Facility can be found online: https://www.research-equipment.ucl.ac.uk/id/item/3383/adaptive-optics-scanning-laser-ophthalmoscope.html

Applicants should have a minimum of 5 A*-C GCSEs or equivalent. Hands-on experience of basic image processing (ImageJ/Fiji) would be desirable but not essential. An interest in working with patients would also be required.

DBS Check:

Due to the nature of the role, an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this post. Any offer of employment will be subject to a DBS check.

Working with some of the greatest intellects in the world, UCL also offers a generous pension scheme and holiday allowance, plus closure and bank holidays as well as enhanced parental pay and more. Visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/work-at-ucl/reward-and-benefits to find out more.
