2 x Lecturer / Senior Lecturers in Structural Analysis and materials/ Propulsion/ Data Science/ Robotics/ Theoretical Fluid Mechanics and control

The Department of Aeronautics wishes to appoint two fixed-term Lecturers / Senior Lecturers (Assistant/Associate Professor) in the areas of Structural Analysis and materials/ Propulsion/ Data Science/ Robotics/ Theoretical Fluid Mechanics and control.

We expect the successful candidates to be enthusiastic teachers and outstanding researchers who will help maintain our high levels of scholarship and research. In the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework exercise, 46% of the department’s research was assessed as “world leading”.

The department is very active in a range of research aimed at developing and applying theoretical, computational and experimental techniques to address the most challenging, fundamental problems in aeronautics science and technology with the aim of reducing emissions, noise and weight of the next generation of aircraft.

• To develop a broad range of research within the department.


• To direct, lead, or contribute to, a research area at the highest scientifically rigorous levels.


• To teach and examine courses at all levels – undergraduate, masters and higher research degrees – through lectures, seminars, tutorials, course work and personal supervision.


• To act as a coach and role model through excellent practice and mentoring of colleagues.


• To supervise PhD candidates.


• To provide pastoral support for students.


• To contribute to curriculum development.


• To take a leading role in, or contribute to, the development of teaching and teaching methods and assessment.

The potential to make milestone contributions is of the greatest importance.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in aeronautical engineering or a related field They should also have an outstanding research record, as demonstrated by their publications, a good track record in securing research grants and contracts and experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the Aeronautics field.

• Evidence of being able to establish an innovative and coherent research programme.

• Evidence of the potential to plan, lead and direct research activity of outstanding quality.
• Ability to demonstrate a portfolio of research publication commensurate with career stage.
• Experience of teaching Aeronautics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, in addition to the above, candidates must have:

• An exceptionally strong research record

• A demonstrable track record of securing external research funding which may include having secured an independent fellowship.

• Substantial experience in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training, including successful PhD student supervision.
• Extensive evidence of contribution to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusivity in Aeronautics.
