The Elizabeth Bryan Multiple Births Centre (EBMBC) is named after the pioneering work of consultant paediatrician Dr Elizabeth Bryan, founder of the Multiple Births Foundation and former President of the International Society for Twins Studies. The EBMBC’s ambition is to generate new knowledge and insight into the care of multiple birth families that will support the implementation of safe and effective care. This knowledge will be mobilised via professional development and education programmes to support professionals’ knowledge and skills. The Centre will widen its work with key stakeholders and policy makers to ensure multiple birth families are represented in a way that meets their needs and the needs of the professionals that seek to support them.

This will extend to all professional groups that interact with families with multiples from fertility treatments to conception, pregnancy, birth, neonatal care and early life development.

The EBMBC’s key aims are:

  • To develop evidence-based education and professional development programmes for health care and allied professionals involved in the care of multiple births
  • To establish standards for education and professional development for health care and allied professionals
  • To establish a dedicated research programme which will provide an evidence base for practice
  • To support the provision of best quality care for babies, children and their families

The EBMBC is a cluster within the Centre for Social Care, Health and Related Research (C-SCHaRR) at BCU. The overarching aim of C-SCHaRR is the production of world-class research to address current health and social care priorities, with the objective of impacting positively and making a real difference to the quality of health and social care provided.
