Position Overview
KU is seeking an experienced & highly motivated Research Scientist to lead a funded research as project Principal Investigator (PI) in developing a 6U CubeSat platform for technology demonstration in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
The project objective is to demonstrate the capabilities/performance of a number of space technologies developed at Khalifa University; namely micro propulsion system and advanced space sensors. The project poses a great strategic significance as the 6U CubeSat is considered a suitable platform for future terrestrial as well as deep space explorations. This project also aims to provide multiple research opportunities for undergraduate/postgraduate students to gain and enrich relevant knowledge.
Furthermore, the project is to establish critical know-how in key areas of advanced space technologies to support not only UAE's CubeSat-based constellation vision for telecommunications and remoting sensing, but also potential commercial adaptation as startups/spin-offs.
The CubeSat will be designed, integrated, and tested entirely at Khalifa University under the direct supervision of the project PI. As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the KU Space Technology and Innovation Center – KUSTIC (https://www.ku.ac.ae/kustic ) and will get a unique opportunity to work alongside faculty, researchers, and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a broader team.
The Research Scientist will also be in charge of KUSTIC's Yahsat Space Lab (YSL) as lab manager; responsible for managing the activities of the lab in line with the University's research and development strategies, and carrying out the internationally competitive research thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the University.
Position Requirements
- Drive YSL research strategy, as well as annual research plans ensuring they promote leading practices and excellence.
- Develop and manage the budgets; monitor the performance of budgets and report on a timely basis to ensure that any potential divergences are addressed promptly.
- Lead CubeSat development as project PI.
- Provide coaching, guidance and mentoring as required to enhance the internal capabilities of the team and ensure the achievement of established objectives and plans.
- Recommend appropriate training courses as per the pre-determined training needs, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor their results.
- Conduct periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and workflow is running smoothly.
- Submit monthly status updates and quarterly management reports to address the progress of CubeSat development.
- Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
Qualifications
Candidate Profile
Essential Criteria
- PhD in an appropriate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline
- At least three (3) years of experience in leading spacecraft hardware development, integration, and testing; especially in the area of advanced micro propulsion system
- Prior satellite project development, operation, and management experience
- Expert level knowledge project subject area as evidenced by relevant publications and or patents
- Track record of contributing to the writing of successful research grants
- A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
- Highly proficient in spoken and written English
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines.
- Ability to train and mentor students and support fellow researchers
Desired Criteria
- Practical hands-on experience in a system-engineering role in multiple satellite projects
- Strong record in research and project management experience
- Demonstrated prior collaborative working experience with faculty and engineering professionals
- Strong interpersonal skills and thorough understanding of academic/University structure
- Experience leading competitive research grants as principal investigator or named co-investigator in the project team
