Offer Description

Description

The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Assistant in the Chemical and Functional Genomics Laboratory to work on a project aiming to find novel biocontrol agents to manage the spread of Red Palm weevils (RPW), a major threat to palm trees. The position will be based at NYU Abu Dhabi and supervised by Professor Kristin Gunsalus.

The Research Assistant will (1) screen a library of Bacillus thuringiensis strains for a virulence phenotype against RPW larvae using an oral infection method (2) assess the impact of the virulent candidate strains on the RPW fitness and biology, such as growth and development, egg hatching, boring activity, and reproduction (3) identify and characterize toxic causal factors expressed in the pathogenic strains selected from the screen using genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics approaches (4) provide technical assistance in preparing commonly used media and bacterial and chemical solutions; breeding weevils in the lab; maintaining stocks of laboratory reagents and supplies.

Applicants must have a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genomics, or related fields, and an experience in a biology research laboratory.

The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits. This position is available from September 1, 2023, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, two recommendation letters, and contact information for 3 academic referees, all in PDF format via Interfolio.

Questions about specifics of the position can directed to Professor Kristin Gunsalus at [email protected]
