Systems Engineer with Expertise in Vacuum Technology, Cryogenics and Vibration Isolation

The Quantum Center at ETH coordinates the scientific activities in quantum science and technology at ETH Zurich. It interconnects research and teaching across ETH departments and provides a platform for technology development.

The Engineering Unit consists of a team of engineers and technicians who provide know-how, expertise and technical support to Quantum Center members. The Engineering Unit stimulates interactions between research groups and enables cross-fertilization and efficient use of developed technologies. Members of the Engineering Unit collaborate closely with research teams at ETH Zurich and engage in collaborations with Swiss and international industries to pursue its goals.

The project-based position is initially made available until the end of 2025 for which funding is secured.


Job description

In this position, you will support the development of vacuum and cryptosystems in the laboratories of Quantum Center members. You will assist in the acquisition, troubleshooting and maintenance of vacuum and cryptosystems (4K closed cycle and flow cryostats, wet and dry dilution refrigerators, UHV vacuum systems) and in the characterization of mechanical vibrations and electromagnetic noise and their mitigation. Experience with electronic data acquisition and data processing is important. Furthermore, you are expected to learn about the developments in the different groups and help to exchange know-how and to continuously and independently acquire new skills and fill knowledge gaps. Knowledge of quantum science and technology is not a requirement, but an interest in the field is expected.
