Simulation Expert / Reservoir Engineer at the Geothermal Energy and Geofluids Group

Updated: about 1 year ago
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The ETH Zürich Geothermal Energy & Geofluids Group (GEG ) investigates reactive fluid and (geothermal) energy transfer in the Earth’s crust, employing computer simulations, laboratory experiments and field analyses to gain fundamental insights and to develop sustainable technologies that address society’s needs. One of these technologies (co-invented by Martin Saar ) is CO2-Plume Geothermal (CPG), which turns CCS into CCUS by extracting geothermal energy from the CO2 whilst ultimately geologically sequestering all injected CO2. To advance this technology, a Simulation Expert / Reservoir Engineer is needed, starting 1 January 2023 or later upon agreement.

Job description

We are seeking an individual who is highly motivated to provide quality subsurface evaluations of CPG processes, ranging from the development of high-level portfolio screening tools to detailed compositional reservoir modelling. As Simulation Expert you will integrate and quantify the uncertainty of (subsurface) data for model development, requiring knowledge of, and ability to collaborate with, multiple disciplines ranging from geosciences (geology, geochemistry, geomechanics, etc.) to mechanical engineering (CO2-based geothermal power plant design) and techno-economics (of geothermal power plants and CCUS). Leveraging your expertise and modelling insights, your innovative thinking extends the state-of-the-art of CPG technology and drives the development of high-value CPG projects together with industry partners.

Your profile

You have a university degree (MSc or PhD) in Geoscience, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent technical subject and at least 4 years of reservoir simulation experience in the industry, as well as:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of 3D compositional, multiphase and non-isothermal (i.e. including energy transfer) reservoir simulations, ideally in the domain of CCS or CO2 EOR/EGR. Geothermal energy modelling experience is a plus
  • Proficient in reservoir simulation tools (CMG GEM or equivalent)
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, with exposure to geology, geomechanics, petrophysics, production chemistry, production technology, well engineering, facilities/power plant components and economics
  • Knowledge of Petroleum Engineering fundamentals (PVT, SCAL, MBAL, PTA)
  • Understanding of methodologies to assess and quantify subsurface uncertainty
  • Experience in data analytics and visualization (use of Python or equivalent)
  • Exposure to field piloting, surveillance planning and/or field development planning is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • Experience publishing research results in peer-reviewed publications is a plus
  • Fluency in English is required
