The Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich is one of the leading international research institutions in its field. This Postdoc position is within the group "International and Comparative Media Research" led by Professor Frank Esser. The group is particularly interested in how processes of political communication develop and differ internationally depending on the conditions of the information environments surrounding them.
We welcome applications of candidates interested in international developments in political communication. We have a broad understanding of political communication and find connections to related fields particularly exciting, such as technology, user behavior and participation, digital journalism and news, as well as transformations in media systems and democracy. Candidates with strong competencies in computational methods, interest in comparative research, and knowledge of non-Western media systems are especially welcome. Successful candidates will be expected to develop their own research, collaborate with members of the group, and contribute to teaching. The position is on a fixed term basis of 3 years and can be extended to 6 years.

  • Planning and execution of high-quality research projects
  • Publications in leading communication journals and presentations at international conferences
  • Teaching courses relevant to your research interests and relevant for our BA and MA study programs
  • Further academic qualification; academic service

Your profile
  • Very good doctoral degree in Communication Studies or neighboring discipline
  • Proven research and teaching competence in the broad field of political communication (or its connections to adjacent fields)
  • Very good knowledge of theories in Communication Studies
  • Strong interest in comparative international communication research and media systems beyond the West
  • Advanced skills in quantitative methods of empirical social science
  • Advanced skills in text as data methods and R; additional skills in Python an asset
  • Analytical skills and capacity for independent, internationally visible research
  • Enthusiasm for working in teams
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in German is desirable but not required
