Senior Lecturer/Senior Scientist in Statistics

A position as a Senior Scientist is available at the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich. The position is initially limited to three years and, subject to performance and approval by the ETH executive board, can be converted into a permanent appointment. The start date is as soon as possible. The salary level will be based on the qualifications of the applicants. Depending on relevant experience and qualifications, the request for permanent employment can also be submitted before taking up the position.


Job description

You are part of the institute "Seminar for Statistics", an international team of researchers, students, and administrative staff. You teach lecture courses and seminars in the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Mathematics, Statistics, and Data Science, as well as service lectures in other departments. You contribute actively to a world-class center in statistical computing. You supervise students during their master's theses, bachelor's theses, and semester theses (involvement in the supervision of doctoral theses is optional). You perform scientific research in statistics, machine learning, or related fields. You contribute to service and administrative tasks in the institute and the department.


Your profile

We expect you to have:

  • A PhD in statistics, machine learning, or a closely related field
  • High motivation, experience, and proven achievements in teaching
  • Outstanding computational skills in statistics and machine learning, including strong programming skills (e.g., in Python or R)
  • Internationally recognized research achievements (e.g., in the form of scientific papers in high-quality venues)
  • Good communication skills in English and willingness to teach in German after three years
  • The ability and willingness to work in a team
