The Scientific Center for Optical and Electron Microscopy (ScopeM) is a central scientific technology platform of ETH Zurich providing resources and services in light and electron microscopy (and related areas). As of August 1st, 2022, or upon agreement, we have an opening for a position as Senior Expert in Electron Microscopy (in-situ TEM).

Project background

ScopeM maintainsstate-of-the-art microscopy equipment and supports a variety of interdisciplinary research and training programs as well as methodological research in light and electron microscopy. ScopeM operates numerous transmission and scanning electron microscopes (TEM & SEM), as well as Focused Ion Beam Systems (FIB-SEM) and further sample preparation equipment. ScopeM aims at developing a frontier microscopy center for studying materials under operating conditions.

Job description

You will provide expert consulting to EM users on sample preparation, as well as on imaging and analytical methods. You will contribute to the high-quality training of users, the execution of service projects and ensure the maintenance of the corresponding equipment in collaboration with the instrument suppliers.

You will also contribute to the operation and development of the facility, to the definition of ScopeM technological roadmap and strategy for equipment renewal.

You are expected to propose and set-up new projects for method and instrument development, including identifying and submitting corresponding proposals to funding agencies.

Your profile
  • You bring along an extensive practical experience in Electron Microscopy, in particular in environmental in-situ TEM.
  • You have a broad knowledge in EM and a clear vision how this technology will further develop in the future.
  • You have demonstrated expertise in instrumentation as well as teaching/training skills.
  • A very good understanding of and experience in both hard and soft materials will be a great asset.
  • You have demonstrated leadership skills, and already worked several years in a similar position in a microscopy facility or are highly motivated to do so.

We offer

ScopeM offers a welcoming working environment in an international and multidisciplinary environment. You will interact with an experienced team, which is supported by excellent mechanical and electronics workshops. The lab languages are English and German. This key position is foreseen as a long-term employment with the potential to lead a team of experts in close interaction with ETH Zurich faculty and external collaborators.
