Offer Description

The Horizon Europe funded project CleanCloud aims to understand interactions between clouds and aerosols in various geographic and climatic regions, and to improve their representation in numerical climate and weather models in order to quantify their impact on climate, weather and societies.

In the framework of CleanCloud, the Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory at EPFL will contribute to the investigation of secondary ice production mechanisms in mixed-phase clouds by collecting and analyzing multifrequency polarimetric spectral radar data at Villum (northern Greenland) and Mount Helmos (Greece). A Postdoc position is opening to conduct these activities and the main objectives are:
1. Contribute to the deployment of the radar systems (implying field work in Greece), process the collected observations to build a high-quality multifrequency radar data set.
2. Adapt or develop radar-based retrieval algorithms to obtain quantitative information on the microphysical properties of cloud and precipitation particles at the instrumented sites.
3. Investigate the links between cloud and precipitation properties and various secondary ice production mechanisms in mixed-phase clouds at the considered locations.

We are looking for a creative and energetic Postdoc to achieve the objectives listed above, starting in the beginning of 2024. Funding is available for 2 years through the CleanCloud project, with a competitive salary (starting at 86 kCHF/year). Review of the applications will continue until the position is filled.
The Postdoc project will be supervised by Prof. Alexis Berne and will be conducted in close collaboration with PhDs and Postdocs working for CleanCloud but also for other thematically related projects.

Applicants should hold a PhD in (radar) meteorology, atmospheric physics or a closely related field. Experience with field work, data management, processing and analysis, as well as good programming skills in Python are of advantage. Proficiency in spoken/written English is mandatory. Applications should include a CV, a statement of research interests and qualifications, as well as contact details of three academic referees, all in pdf format.
