Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

In line with Empa’s mission, its Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) at Empa St. Gallen creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.

Within TSL’s Critical Materials and Resource Efficiency Group (CARE), we are looking for a

The candidate will support research projects in the areas of recovery of rare metals from end-of-life vehicles and collection, transportation and recycling of Li-ion batteries from the automotive sector. He or she will futhermore provide guidance and capacity building within the ongoing the development cooperation program Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI,www.sustainable-recycling.org ).

The candidate should have a strong background in chemical, environmental or sustainability science, or related disciplines. He or she should be capable to develop laboratory experiments and computational models in the above mentioned fields and should have experience with working in development country settings. Furthermore, the candidate should have excellent command of written and spoken German and English with additional language skills being an asset. The assignment might include 1 to 3 missions of 1 to 2 weeks duration per year to partner countries of the SRI program (Colombia, Peru, Ghana, Egypt and South-Africa).
