Your mission :
STI is looking for a scientific laboratory manager for various shared STI labs on the EPFL Neuchatel campus.


Main duties and responsibilities include :

Reporting directly to the infrastructure manager, with a day-to day coordination and strategic planning with the scientific director of EPFL-NE and M2C, your missions are as follows:

  • Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and management of the shared laboratories and ensure smooth functioning of the lab, maintaining a safe and efficient work environment, and supporting the research or testing activities conducted within the facility.
  • Lab Operations Management:
    • responsible for organizing and coordinating the operational activities of the laboratory. This includes managing lab schedules, ensuring proper utilization of resources, and overseeing the maintenance and calibration of lab equipment.
    • training new users, ensuring routine safe lab operations, maintaining shared candidate will also interface with campus-level safety operations personnel
  • Manage shared advanced fabrication and characterization laboratories, including training new users, ensuring routine safe lab operations, maintaining shared facilities, and helping new users define protocols for safe use of the laboratory. The candidate will also interface to individual laboratories that use said equipment to ensure continuity of training and expertise with EPFL Neuchatel community. The candidate will also be responsible for interfacing with EPFL NE management personnel to ensure strategic management and planning of shared resources.
  • Safety Compliance: responsible for maintaining a safe working environment in the laboratory. They must ensure compliance with safety regulations, develop and enforce safety protocols, and conduct regular safety training for lab personnel. They also manage the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: maintain detailed records of lab activities, experiments, equipment maintenance and inventory. They ensure that documentation is accurate, organized, and easily accessible for reference and regulatory purposes.
  • Collaboration and Communication: collaborate with researchers, faculty, and other stakeholder to understand project requirements and provide necessary support. They also facilitate effective communication within the lab and with external partners or clients.
  • Continuous Improvement: identifying areas for process improvement and implementing strategies to enhance lab efficiency, productivity, and quality. They stay updated with advancements in laboratory techniques, technologies, and regulations to recommend and implement best practices.

  • Your profile :
    The candidate is expected to preferably have a PhD and experience in managing materials, processing, and chemistry laboratories. The candidate is expected to have experience and expertise in dealing with nanomaterials, general chemical safety, synthesis, processing, and materials characterization equipment, and additive fabrication equipment. The candidate should have experience in training users on the above topics, and in helping users define protocols for safe lab operations in the regard. In exception circumstances, highly qualified candidates without PhDs but extensive relevant scientific training will also be considered.

    The position is CDI 50 % position, and it is anticipated that the candidate will serve in this position at least 4 days / week, with hours distributed as appropriator during regular business hours.
