Science Diplomacy Researcher at the Center of Security Studies

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a centre of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy.

Our CSS Think Tank serves as an important link between academia and practitioners and as a point of contact and reference for the wider public.

Project background

Over the course of history, science diplomacy has come to play a crucial role in reaching foreign policy objectives. In an increasingly competitive international environment, the importance of science diplomacy is once again growing. How can science diplomacy contribute to tackling global challenges such as the governance of emerging technologies, mitigating the consequences of climate change, and managing global health? What science diplomacy instruments are relevant to reaching these objectives? What role can Switzerland play as an actor in science diplomacy?

Job description

We are looking for a researcher to work on these and related questions at the CSS Think Tank. The responsibilities of the role will consist of supporting ongoing science diplomacy initiatives and assisting with relevant teaching activities at ETH. The position will also allow applicants to propose, contribute to, and lead applied research projects on science diplomacy based on their interests. Applicants are encouraged to indicate in their cover letter how they would approach the design of such a research profile. Your main tasks will be as follows:

  • Support the coordination of ongoing science diplomacy initiatives
  • Assist with the implementation of relevant teaching activities at ETH Zurich
  • Propose, contribute to, and lead applied research projects on science diplomacy
  • Contribute to consulting activities for external stakeholders in Bern and Geneva

Your profile
  • Advanced degree (MA or PhD) in a relevant discipline (e.g., International Relations, Public Policy, Security Studies, Political Science and Political Economy).
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently

The CSS is a multilingual environment, so proficiency in English alongside at least one Swiss national language is required. Work experience in international organisations or think tanks (e.g. gathered through an internship) would be an advantage, as is knowledge of the Swiss political landscape.

We offer

We offer you an exciting opportunity to develop and showcase your expertise in a think tank that is both university-based and close to the policy-making environment in Bern. The position is non-permanent: The term of appointment is 3 years. In addition, we offer attractive working conditions and a workplace in the centre of Zurich. Further training and career development are central elements of our personnel policy!
