Research Technician in Plant Ecology

Updated: about 1 year ago
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Plant Ecology groups of Janneke Hille Ris Lambers and Jake Alexander (ETH Zürich) are seeking two research technicians to participate in research quantifying the responses of plant communities to climate change.

Current research areas within the groups include:

  • the magnitude and drivers of plant community turnover with climate change (both);
  • whether climatic and biological constraints on tree seedling performance influence forest responses to climate change (HRL); and
  • the drivers and consequences of biological invasions, especially in mountain ecosystems (Alexander).

Position 1 (80-100%); supervisor Janneke Hille Ris Lambers

We seek a technician to primarily assist with establishing and maintaining long-term ecological monitoring of forest tree regeneration in Swiss forest sites, which allows us to explore how this life history stage may constrain forest responses to climate change. For more information about research in the group see our website . Tasks include ecological data collection in the field and lab, equipment maintenance (field material and technical installations at ETH), the development of sampling protocols, assistance in greenhouse experiments and data management.

Position 2 (80-100%); supervisor Jake Alexander.

We seek a technician to primarily assist with and maintain field experiments in the Swiss Alps (main site at Calanda, GR). The experiments investigate the impacts on alpine ecosystems of plants that are expanding their distributions under climate change (for further information see our research description and the MIREN network ). Tasks include ecological data collection in the field and lab (e.g. plant traits/demography, soil sampling, vegetation relevés), database management, development of sampling protocols, and maintenance of field sites (e.g. fencing, mowing) and field equipment.

Fieldwork can be physically demanding (e.g. hiking to reach field sites at high elevations, kneeling down, gardening work) and so for both positions, a passion for outdoor work under all weather conditions is essential, as is a willingness for regular multi-day field stays during the summer.

For both positions, the contracts will run from May/June until September/October 2023.
