The Chair of Architecture and Urban Design Prof. Hubert Klumpner, Department of Architecture, www.klumpner.arch.ethz.ch is looking for an Architect with coding and scripting skills to collaborate as Research Assistant within the UTPS - Urban Transformation Project Sarajevo, starting in February 2022 or by arrangement.


Project background

The Urban Transformation Project Sarajevo UTPS is an academic partnership between the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs – SECO and ETH Zurich, to promote the transfer of knowledge between Swiss and Bosnian academic and public institutions, addressing infrastructural matters. The UTPS research project contributes to modernizing the system of integral urban planning in the Canton of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, supporting the elaboration of the cantonal Urban Plan Sarajevo 2040. The UTPS Project aims to build and share knowledge for innovative urban planning approaches, establish practices based on state-of-the-art digital know-how, and simulate and visualize urban planning processes to enable prosperous socio-economic development.


Job description

You will support the professor and the project coordinator in all digital processes, design and project development matters related to the project outputs and the decision-making tools. You will work closely with the project architects, engineers, Bosnian professors and authorities, teaching team, and other partners/collaborators.


Your profile

You have a Master's degree in architecture and working experience in architectural offices, including design development and construction details. You possess strong graphic and design skills, which enable you to develop high-quality 3D-models and renderings. Your proficient IT skills enable you to engage in dialogue with computer scientists, design architects, and urban planners. One of your strengths is analyzing complex relationships and processes and abstract the essentials to develop process-oriented implementations and computer-generated prototypes. You have excellent design skills (Rhino, AutoCAD, Grasshopper), as well as scripting / coding skills, allied to a solid knowledge of GIS software (Python, C++, Java); interest in big data, engineering, and systems thinking.

Your excellent command of Adobe Creative Suite further allows you to produce qualitative visualizations, diagrams, and publications, in addition to your language proficiency in German and English, as well as a good command of Bosnian. Serbocroatian and Spanish skills are a plus. The position is fully based in Zurich, Switzerland. Your regular office presence is required. Your availability and eligibility to travel for short- and midterm stays abroad is a key requirement.
