The Automatic Control Laboratory (IfA, https://control.ee.ethz.ch/ ) of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET, https://ee.ethz.ch/ ) is recruiting a project manager for the new National Centre of Competence in Research “Dependable Ubiquitous Automation” (NCCR Automation), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.


Project background

NCCR Automation conducts research on methods and computational tools for automatic control and automation, as well as their applications to energy management, mobility and industrial processes. Topics of interest include data driven decision making and machine learning, decision making under uncertainty, distributed control, embedded systems, optimisation, and cyber-security. In addition, the project foresees a large-scale deployment of the resulting methods to energy management at a neighbourhood scale. The Centre comprises 16 principal investigators in 4 research institutions across Switzerland; ETH Zurich serves at the Home Institution.


Job description

The Project Manager will play the central role in the coordination and administration activities of the project. The main duties will be:

  • Serve as a liaison between the Centre, the funding agency, the external advisory and review panels, as well as existing structures in the participating institutions.
  • Coordinate the Centre’s reporting activities, especially the production of the annual progress report.
  • Coordinate the financial activities, including distributions of funds, financial reporting, and support for auditing.
  • Organise meetings and events to promote cohesion among the partners and solicit feedback from the external advisory and review panels.
  • Monitor the outreach activities of the Centre, supported by a dedicated communication specialist.
  • Depending on the background and interests of the successful candidate, additional duties (monitoring of the Centre’s education activities, equal opportunities, data management strategy, etc.) can be considered. However, there are no research, development, or teaching activities foreseen in the role.


    Your profile

    You should ideally have project management experience in industry or academia, have high organisational skills and be able to integrate in a team with diverse backgrounds. Good communication skills, the ability to cooperate and pronounced problem-solving qualities distinguish you just as much as initiative, natural assertiveness and a confident manner. With your analytical planning skills you can turn complexity into clarity. With your open, convincing and competent manner you will win and motivate your environment. Very good English & German language skills, both written and spoken, as well as an experienced handling of MS-Office are required. Preferably, you are familiar with the specific of an academic organization with its many areas of interest between administration, teaching and research. An engineering degree in automatic control or related field is a plus.
