Project description:

A postdoc position is available at the Laboratory of Astrophysics (LASTRO, https://www.epfl.ch/labs/lastro/ ) of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. A motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher will be recruited to work on developing pipelines for multi-messenger astronomy, focusing on both generic and telescope / detector specific “open research data analysis services” (ORDAS) for the CTA and SKA observatories, and incorporating developed tools into the Multi-Messenger Online Data Analysis (MMODA) platform.

Requirements:

Candidates should have the following experience:

  • PhD in physics
  • Experience in data analysis in radio astronomy or gamma ray astronomy
  • Experience in data analysis time-domain astronomy / transient astronomy
  • Strong expertise developing software in python
  • Experience in distributed computing and storage resources such as kubernetes
  • Experience in docker / containers
  • Experience developing web-based analysis interfaces

Working environment:

EPFL is recognized as one of the best Universities in Europe, addressing both engineering and fundamental sciences. The successful applicant will join the Laboratory of Astrophysics (LASTRO), which focuses on research in extragalactic astrophysics and cosmology (https://www.epfl.ch/labs/lastro ). The laboratory consists of approximately 15 PhD students, 10 postdoctoral researchers, 4 professors, and one data scientist.

The Astrophysicists from EPFL and Geneva University share the same facilities at the Observatoire de Sauverny near Geneva, but also have offices on the EPFL campus. There are also natural connections with CERN and with other Swiss Universities as well as with the Swiss National HPC Center (cscs.ch ). Additionally, EPFL hosts world-leading research institutes for particle physics, cosmology, and has a strong community on data science (Advanced Signal Processing, Machine Learning, HPC …). In 2020, EPFL became a member of the SKA Organization (https://www.epfl.ch/labs/lastro/scientific-activities/ska/ ) and coordinates the contributions to this project on behalf of the Swiss academic community. EFPL team contributes to development of the CTA Off-site data center and in the data management of the Large Size Telescope prototype for CTA.
