Postdoctoral Position in Peptide Chemistry and Drug Design

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 20 Oct 2022

The Molecular Pharmacy group at the Pharmacenter of the University of Basel is looking for highly motivated candidates for a full-time postdoctoral position in peptide chemistry and drug design.
Our multi-disciplinary group at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is primarily interested in the development of innovative therapeutic concepts for the treatment of clinical conditions that are mediated by inappropriate activation of host defense pathways such as the complement and coagulation systems. By employing peptides/peptidomimetics, engineered proteins and carbohydrate-based molecules, we are currently aiming to generate a broad portfolio of immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and anti-infective compounds with favorable efficacy and pharmacokinetic profiles. Our laboratory has strong expertise in pharmaceutical chemistry and immunobiology and is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and infrastructure for the synthesis, characterization and biological evaluation of peptide-based drugs. Moreover, numerous well-established collaborations with local and international groups provide us access to methods ranging from computational drug design to preclinical evaluation.

The postdoctoral researcher in this position is expected to:

  • drive a peptide platform that includes the design, synthesis, purification, characterization, evaluation and refinement of peptidic and peptidomimetic drug candidates.
  • work in an interdisciplinary team with organic chemists, biologists and pharmacists to improve and coordinate aspects such as pharmacokinetic profiling and biological evaluation.
  • be involved in the project development and participate in group seminars, supervision of PhD students and training of BSc/MSc students.

Successful applicants should have a PhD in peptide chemistry with strong experience in manual and automated peptide synthesis and in analytical methods (HPLC, LC-MS). Previous experience in bioconjugate chemistry, the design of macrocyclic peptides, peptidomimetics or glycopeptides, and/or with biochemical and biophysical characterization methods is desirable. Candidates should be highly motivated, have good command of the English language, and be able to work well in a team as well as independently.

  • a highly collaborative, international and interactive work environment
  • interdisciplinary research topic at the interface of basic science and drug discovery & development
  • opportunities to advance research, teaching and supervision skills
