Postdoc/Scientist in the field of laser processing with intelligent system


The main goal of the project is to development in situ and real-time monitoring of a specific laser process. Your main responsibilities include:


  • Perform complex laser experiment with various real-time and in situ technics
  • Pre-process data using standard machine learning algorithms
  • Material characterization with state-of-the-art methods
  • Collaborate with internal and external groups as well as industrial partners
  • Communicate results at meetings, conferences and through high-impact publications

The research is multidisciplinary and requires close collaboration with data scientists. Due to a high world interest in online and real-time monitoring of laser processes, a research experience acquired in this program will guarantee exciting future opportunities both in academia and industry, nationally and internationally. The work place will be at Empa in Thun, next to Bern, Switzerland.


Your profile: You hold a Ph.D. degree obtained in laser physics, photonics, electrical engineering or a closely related field as documented by a strong publication track record in this field. You must have a high expertise and strong experimental background in laser processes, optics as well as acoustic and optical sensors. Knowledge in machine learning and artificial intelligence will be a significant advantage. Knowledge in Fiber Bragg Gratings or any kind of opto-acoustic sensors is an advantage. Finally, it is highly recommended to have a driving license.


A strong desire to work at the leading edge of materials technology and a high level of motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team in the field of laser physics, material scientist and data scientist are essential. You have a clear interest to work in an application-oriented research environment in close collaboration with our industrial partner. Very good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of French and/or German would be an advantage. The full-time position is available from 1 March 2022 or upon agreement and is initially limited to one year with a possibility for contract extension upon candidate performance.
