Are you a bioinformatician with strong bioinformatics skills? Do you have a passion for evolutionary biology? If you answer yes to both, a few Postdoc positions are available in the lab of Dr. Rie Shimizu-Inatsugi and Prof. Dr. Kentaro Shimizu at the University of Zurich.
Our team is a mixture of people with diverse backgrounds: ecology, physiology, genetics, bioinformatics etc. Our research covers a wide range of evolutionary biology and relevant interdisciplinary topics supported by cutting-edge techniques of the members in each area.
Your responsibilities
The topic is about the genetic and epigenetic evolution of polyploid and diploid plant species, deciphering the molecular mechanisms behind their important traits using high-throughput sequencing data.
The duration of the project is between 3 to 4 years with the possibility for further extensions by agreement.
Your profile
Bioinformatician with strong bioinformatics skills. The necessary skills are:
  • R, particularly data wrangling and visualization (tidyverse)
  • RNA-seq, BS-seq or whole genome data analysis pipelines: a) Steps: quality check, trimming, alignment, etc., b)Tools: FastQC, Trimmomatic/Trim Galore, STAR, etc.
  • Familiar with the command line and working on a remote server
  • At ease with the git version control system
  • Excellent communication skills in English and critical thinking to: a) Share bioinformatics knowledge with non-experts, b) Assess limitations and potential issues, c) Link in-depth and large scale genomic findings to the evolutionary context
  • Good task management skills to deal with: a) Different data analyses in parallel, b) Consistent reporting on the project status
  • Previous experience with snakemake as workflow management system is a plus
  • Experience with conda for package management is a plus
