80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Center of Sustainable Future Mobility (CSFM)  has been recently established with the aim to promote research that foster the realization of a sustainable transportation system from an environmental, social, and economic perspective. The center will serve as the entry point for external partners as well as coordination unit for interdisciplinary research and partnerships around the challenges of future mobility.

Project background

To support research and policy making we envisage the creation of a field-specific Digital Twin of Switzerland and its interactions with its neighbours building on the data sets and models available to different projects within the CSFM community. It will make the unique role and contribution of the center to the society visible, but more importantly it will allow the different groups to build on a high-quality base for their individual and joint research. Examples of such overarching discussions, research which can profit from such a well-documented and regularly updated digital twin could be for example:

  • Co-optimization of traffic flows with charging stations, e-catenary system corridors, hydrogen logistics, other relevant infrastructure, etc.
  • Empirical insights from behaviour/decision making of consumers/investors on mobility related matters.

The digital twin will focus in the first instance on the population of persons and firms, their preferences, travel demand, transport and energy networks and timetables, service providers and their fleets, land use patterns and travel behaviours. The maintenance of the digital twin will require on-going work and research for the necessary data pipelines. The interaction with the relevant external data partners will be central to its success.
