The ETH Laboratory of Toxicology, headed by Prof. Shana Sturla, is looking for a laboratory technician to support research on diverse projects. We are located at the ETH Zentrum Campus, close to the main building of ETH Zurich. The position involves mass spectrometry for the quantitative analysis and identification of metabolites and related biologically relevant small molecules in complex biological samples.


Project background

The Laboratory of Toxicology conducts research aiming to understand biochemical mechanisms governing the bioactive properties of chemicals. For this purpose, we develop and implement novel chemical bioanalysis methods. With the resulting knowledge and tools, we advance precision approaches in disease prevention and therapy. 


Job description

We seek a Laboratory Technician to support current projects in the lab. You will be part of an international team of researchers and a dynamic scientific environment that involves the use of a wide range of experimental methods at the interface of chemistry and biology.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, optimize, and apply analytical methods (especially HPLC & ESI-LC-MS)
  • Perform sample work/up and analysis in different ongoing research projects in cooperation with other researchers inside and outside the group
  • Review and prepare operating protocols and procedures in English
  • Up-keep and maintenance of analytical instruments and associated infrastructure, including monitoring of instrument/component usage
  • Oversight of group use of instruments and best practices in the analytical laboratory

Your profile

You have formal training as a laboratory technician, or a BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related, or equivalent qualification. It is preferred that you have scientific experience relevant to biological mass spectrometry and/or small molecule analysis. You are organized and work with high precision and diligent documentation skills. You possess good interpersonal skills and can communicate effectively in English and preferably also in German. You enjoy working with diverse research and technical staff in a team-oriented manner and with flexibility. You are willing to take responsibility for tasks and are not afraid to test new protocols and ideas.
