Laboratory Automation Scientist

The Laboratory Automation Facility (LAF) is a central research and service platform at the ETH's Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) , located in Basel.  We support the department’s efforts to understand, program and build complex biological systems by miniaturizing and automating complex experimental processes on state-​of-the-art robotic systems to gain throughput, speed, robustness and reproducibility. We provide such implementation and access to complex laboratory workflows on automated liquid handling systems such as TECAN and Hamilton and other automation devices. The LAF also invests in teaching of master students to familiarize future customers early with the peculiarities of automated workflow development. The facility is staffed with two Lab Automation Experts.


Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who will be responsible for the operation of automation/robotics within the facility. Responsibilities include transferring (programming and validating) experimental protocols into robotic workflows, instrument configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting. The position demands very good problem solving skills of complex technical issues and the ability to work independently. You will work closely together with the scientists of our department to design and implement new protocols for their projects and will be involved in training and teaching.

Your profile

We seek a technology-affine person with a strong experience in the field of laboratory automation and possibly a background in life sciences. The position requires hands-on experience in assay/workflow development and instrument maintenance. Programming skills of liquid handling systems software like Hamilton Venus, Tecan Freedom EVOware or with standard programming languages (Python, C++, Matlab or R) are essential. Experience with either mammalian cell culture, microbiology, molecular biology, high content screening or other life-science techniques is a plus.

Fluency in English is a prerequisite to support scientific research and operations at ETH. You should be experienced in the management of complex projects in an academic environment. You are a great team player and possess the ability to adapt to the service character of the facility and be able to work in a variety of scientific areas.

This position is permanent, located in Basel and starts 1st of October 2022.
