80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) is one of ETH’s extradepartmental centers and a joint venture between ETH Zurich, MeteoSwiss, Empa, and WSL. One central focus of C2SM consists in providing technical programming support to the members groups in the area of regional weather and climate modelling. In particular, C2SM, in close collaboration with ETH Zurich and MeteoSwiss, is involved in the further development of national Swiss climate scenarios.

Job description

In this internship you will work on the further development of Swiss climate scenarios and on the integration of results and evidence from the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) into the Swiss scenario landscape. In particular, you will analyse and assess to what extent the CMIP6 ensemble of global climate simulations compares to the previous CMIP5 ensemble in terms of climate change signals over Central Europe and the Greater Alpine Region. For this purpose you will extend and maintain the respective database of climate model output. You will furthermore implement and assess approaches to integrate CMIP6 information into the CMIP5-based CH2018 Climate Scenarios for Switzerland .

The internship will be jointly supervised by the staff of C2SM and by members of the Climate Department of MeteoSwiss. The main workplace will be at the MeteoSwiss headquarters at Zurich Airport, but - independent of the prevailing COVID-19 regulations – working from home office will partly be possible.
