Head of Genomic Engineering & Transgenic Unit

The ETH Phenomics Center is a modern, state-of-the art research & technology platform that supports the molecular health sciences research groups at ETH Zurich performing research in mouse genetics, functional genomics and phenotyping. In this capacity, we have established a Transgenic Unit that provides full services for the generation of transgenic and gene modified mice. With this position, we seek a leader, experienced in rodent genome engineering and gene targeting, but also in customer relations and team management. We have an open position in the Transgenic Unit as of August 2022 or upon agreement for an experienced person as Head of Genomic Engineering & Transgenic Unit.

Job description

Youwill be responsible for leading and overseeing EPIC's Transgenic Unit, incl. genome engineering and transgenic services. This includes planning and implementation of workflows and related processes and optimizing the scope of services offered to meet the needs of ETH researchers.

Further duties include:

  • Responsible for networking and training to keep abreast of the research needs to encourage scientists to use transgenic facility,
  • Advising Transgenic Unit scientific investigators on how to design projects with genetically engineered mice, and identifying the ideal state-of-the-art technology for their research program,
  • Managerial responsibility for coordination, quality, and success of enduring and complex transgenic projects. Transgenic technologies include Gene targeting, ES-cell-based blastocyst as well as CRISPR-based embryo injection, embryo transfer, allele analysis using long-read sequencing, IVF, sperm, and embryo freezing
  • Budget management and service-related price calculation and approval,
  • Presentation of the work in meetings, conferences, and courses.

Flexible work patterns and weekend work will be required for tissue culture as part of a laboratory rotation.

The position is located at the ETH Phenomics Center with a strong association to leading research groups at the Institute of Molecular Health Sciences and the Institute of Food Nutrition and Health.

ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits.

Your profile

For this position, a self-driven, flexible, goal- and service oriented spirit is essential. You need to demonstrate previous hands-on experience in gene targeting, in leading and motivating staff, a clear interest in close collaboration with research groups beyond providing a routine service, and a strong commitment for learning new techniques and staying at the forefront of current genome engineering knowledge. You are well organized, have people- and project-leading experience, are hard-working with a strong eye for detail and have the ability to handle complex information. You have the ability to work independently but also communicate with the EPIC management board.

A PhD in Biological Sciences and a strong track record of relevant molecular biology work is required, together with a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in transgenic technologies and at least 2 years of experience in leading personnel and project management. Holding of LTK1 (respectively FELASA B) or LTK2 (respectively FELASA C) certificate would be an advantage. Excellent organizational skills, strong communication in English and German as well as skills with common office applications and design software will be required.
